Online Teaching Mistakes That Make Students Lose Interest

You start an online class. Students join on time. Their names appear on the screen. Everything seems fine.

Then the class goes quiet.

Some students stop answering. Others keep their cameras off. A few may be checking their phones, opening other tabs, or simply waiting for the class to end.

If this sounds familiar, the problem may not be your subject or your students. It may be the way the online class is designed.

Online learning creates a different challenge for teachers. Students have more distractions around them, and teachers have fewer ways to notice when attention starts to drop. Research published in 2026 found that media multitasking was negatively linked with online learning engagement among nursing students. Earlier research also found that students were more likely to report distraction from multitasking in online classes than in face-to-face classes.

So, what makes students lose interest in an online class?

Here are some common online teaching mistakes and what teachers can do instead.

1. Talking for the Entire Class

One of the easiest mistakes is turning an online class into a long lecture.

The teacher talks. Students listen. Slides keep changing.

For a few minutes, this may work. But when students have no reason to respond, discuss, solve, or create something, their role becomes passive.

Online engagement is not just about keeping students connected to a meeting. A 2026 meta-analysis of 124 studies found that instructor support and a collaborative learning environment were among the strongest contextual factors linked with student engagement in digital higher education.

Instead of talking for 45 minutes, break the lesson into smaller sections.

Explain a concept.

Ask a question.

Run a quick poll.

Let students discuss a problem.

Then continue the lesson.

The goal is to give students something to do, not just something to watch.

2. Asking, “Does Everyone Understand?”

This question sounds helpful, but it often gives teachers very little information.

Most students will not type “No” in front of the whole class.

Some may be confused. Others may not want to interrupt. Some may not even know what they have failed to understand yet.

Try asking a more specific question instead.

For example:

“Which part was hardest: A, B, or C?”

Students can answer through a poll or chat. You immediately get a clearer picture of where the problem is.

Short questions throughout a lesson can also help you find confusion before it becomes a bigger learning gap.

3. Using the Same Activity for Every Student

Students do not all learn or participate in the same way.

One student may be comfortable speaking. Another may prefer writing. Someone else may understand a topic better by working through an example.

If every lesson depends on students answering verbally, some learners may slowly disappear from the conversation.

Try mixing activities.

Use a short quiz.

Ask students to write an answer.

Create a small discussion.

Use a whiteboard for a problem.

Put students into smaller groups when the topic requires discussion.

Different activities give more students a reason to participate.

4. Ignoring the Distraction Problem

Online students are surrounded by distractions.

Their phone is nearby. Social media is one click away. Other browser tabs are open. Messages can appear at any moment.

Teachers cannot control every distraction, but they can design classes that make active participation easier.

A 2026 study involving 780 nursing students found that media multitasking was negatively associated with online learning engagement. The researchers also found that stronger attention control could reduce some of the negative effects.

This is why simply telling students, “Please pay attention,” is rarely enough.

Give them a reason to stay involved.

Ask them to answer questions during the lesson. Give them a short task to complete. Use quick checks instead of waiting until the end of the class.

When students know they may need to respond, the class becomes harder to treat as background noise.

5. Making Every Class Feel the Same

Imagine attending the same type of class every day.

Same opening, Same slides, Same lecture, Same type of homework.

Even a useful subject can start to feel repetitive. This does not mean teachers need to turn every lesson into a show. It means there should be some variation. One lesson might begin with a problem. Another could start with a question.

A difficult topic could use a short quiz before the explanation. A practical subject could use a real-world situation.

Recent research on online learning has also looked at interactive media, including interactive video, simulations, and text-based interactive lessons, as ways to support engagement and retention.

The teaching method should fit the lesson.

6. Treating Attendance as Engagement

A student can attend an online class without really participating in it.

Their name is on the attendance list.

But are they answering questions?

Are they completing activities?

Are they asking for help?

Are they understanding the lesson?

Attendance tells you that a student joined. It does not tell you everything about their learning.

This distinction matters because student engagement in digital learning is connected with both academic and emotional outcomes. The 2026 meta-analysis found meaningful relationships between engagement, academic performance, and students' emotional experiences.

Teachers should therefore look beyond attendance and create opportunities to observe participation.

7. Waiting Until the End to Ask Questions

If students only get a chance to ask questions at the end, many questions may never be asked. A student might forget the question. They may feel shy. Or the class may simply run out of time. Build questions into the lesson instead. After explaining an idea, ask students to apply it. After showing an example, give them a similar problem.

After introducing a new topic, ask them what they think will happen next.

This makes questions part of teaching rather than an extra activity.

8. Using Technology Without a Teaching Purpose

More tools do not automatically create better online classes.

A teacher can use ten different apps and still have a passive lesson.

The better question is:

“What problem is this tool helping me solve?”

If students need to check their understanding, use a quiz.

If they need to share ideas, use discussion or breakout activities.

If you need to explain a difficult concept visually, use a whiteboard.

If you need to review student work, use an assignment or feedback tool.

Technology should support the teaching goal, not become the teaching goal.

9. Forgetting the Human Side of Online Teaching

Online classes can sometimes feel distant.

A teacher may see dozens of names on a screen without getting the same natural feedback they would receive in a physical classroom.

That makes teacher-student interaction even more important.

Research on online classrooms has found that teacher-student interaction plays an important role in supporting communication and the learning process.

Learn students' names.

Ask for their opinions.

Respond to their questions.

Give useful feedback.

Notice when participation changes.

Small interactions can make an online classroom feel less like a video meeting and more like a real learning environment.

10. Thinking AI Will Solve Student Engagement

AI is becoming a bigger part of education, including tutoring and personalised learning.

But AI is not a replacement for good teaching.

The OECD's 2026 Digital Education Outlook warns that simply using generative AI to complete tasks can improve performance without necessarily producing real learning gains. It also highlights the potential of AI when it is used with clear teaching principles.

For teachers, the useful question is not:

“How can AI teach everything for me?”

It is:

“Where can AI support my students while I remain in control of the teaching?”

An AI tutor, for example, can potentially provide extra practice or explanations. The teacher can then focus on instruction, discussion, feedback, and understanding student progress.

AI can support the classroom. It should not replace the relationship between teacher and student.

How Can Teachers Keep Students Interested in Online Classes?

There is no single feature that will make every student stay focused.

The better approach is to build participation into the lesson from the beginning.

Try this simple structure:

Explain → Ask → Practice → Check → Respond

Explain a concept. Ask students a question. Give them something to practise. Check their understanding.

Then respond to what you found.

This is more useful than speaking continuously and checking understanding only at the end.

A virtual classroom can make this process easier when the tools support the way teachers actually teach.

For example, Simpech provides teaching-focused tools such as polls, quizzes, breakout rooms, a whiteboard, attendance, assignments, recording, and other classroom functions. These tools can help teachers move beyond a basic video meeting and create more interactive lessons.

The important point is that the software is only part of the solution.

Good teaching decisions come first.

A Simple Check for Your Next Online Class

Before your next lesson, ask yourself:

Am I doing most of the talking?

If yes, add more student activities.

Can students go 20 minutes without responding?

If yes, add a question, poll, or short task.

Do I know who is actually participating?

If not, look beyond attendance.

Are students expected to apply what they learn?

If not, add a practical example or problem.

Does the technology support my teaching goal?

If not, simplify it.

These small changes can make an online class more active without making it more complicated.

The Real Problem May Not Be Student Attention

When students lose interest, it is easy to blame short attention spans, phones, or social media.

Sometimes those things do matter. But teachers also control part of the learning environment.

If a student spends most of a 60-minute class listening, there are limited reasons for them to participate. If the same student is asked to solve a problem, answer a poll, discuss an idea, complete a quiz, and explain their thinking, the experience changes. The goal is not to make online teaching louder or more entertaining.

It is to make students part of the lesson.

That is the difference between students simply attending an online class and actually taking part in it.

FAQs

Why do students lose interest in online classes?

Students may lose interest when classes are too passive, repetitive, or difficult to follow. Online environments can also make distractions and multitasking easier. Research has linked media multitasking with lower online learning engagement.

How can I make my online classes more interactive?

Break long lectures into shorter sections and add questions, polls, quizzes, discussions, practical tasks, and group activities. The activity should have a clear connection to the lesson.

Is attendance a good measure of student engagement?

Attendance is useful, but it does not show the full picture. A student can attend a class without actively participating or understanding the lesson.

How can AI help online teachers?

AI can support teaching through tutoring, practice, feedback, and personalised assistance. However, the OECD notes that AI use needs clear teaching principles because completing a task successfully with GenAI does not automatically mean that learning has taken place.

What is the best way to improve student participation online?

Give students regular reasons to participate. Ask questions, use interactive activities, check understanding during the lesson, and respond to what students show you.

Make Your Online Classroom More Interactive

Students do not need another online meeting where they simply watch a teacher talk.

They need opportunities to think, respond, practise, ask questions, and take part. If your current virtual classroom makes that difficult, it may be time to look beyond basic video conferencing.
