The Role of AI Tutor in Education: What the EU Teacher Training Gap Tells Us

Picture a teacher who has just been told to "use AI in class." Her school sends one policy PDF. Her students already use chatbots for homework. Nobody has shown her what good use looks like.

She isn't alone. Only 29.7% of EU teachers surveyed in TALIS 2024 had taken part in professional development on AI for teaching and learning. At the same time, four in ten young people aged 16 to 24 in the EU used generative AI tools for formal education in 2025. So students are moving fast, and training is moving slowly. This blog explains the role of AI tutor in education, what the training gap means, and what schools and institutes can do about it.

What is an AI tutor?

An AI tutor is software that gives a student one-to-one help. It can explain a topic in another way, ask practice questions, and give quick feedback.

Think of it as a practice partner that's available between lessons. It doesn't replace the teacher. It can't know a student's home situation, notice a quiet student who is struggling, or decide what a class should learn this term. That judgment stays with people.

What does the 29.7% figure really tell us?

The number comes from TALIS 2024, a large international survey of teachers run by the OECD. It counts teachers who joined professional development on AI. It does not measure how well teachers use AI, or how much they know.

Two cautions are worth keeping in mind. First, TALIS surveys lower secondary teachers, so the number may look different for primary teachers, tutors, or universities. Second, it measures training, not interest. Many teachers may want help and simply haven't been offered any.

The wider OECD picture supports that idea. In the OECD country notes, 36% of teachers on average had used AI in their work, and among those who hadn't, 75% said they lacked the knowledge and skills to teach with it. Teachers aren't refusing AI. Many say they don't know where to start.

Why the gap matters for students

When students use AI alone, nobody checks the answers. A chatbot can sound confident and still be wrong. A student who has never been taught to question its answers may accept them as fact.

Teachers are the people best placed to teach that habit. But they can only teach what they've practised. If students have more AI experience than their teachers, classroom guidance gets thin.

Policy is moving, though unevenly. Nearly two-thirds of education systems now address AI through national strategies, guidance or policy frameworks, but access to advanced AI at school level remains uneven. Rules on paper don't help much if teachers haven't tried the tools themselves.

What do teachers say they need?

A European Commission survey on AI in school education asked educators about this directly. Respondents named continuing professional development and access to approved, safe AI tools as their top priorities, each at 62%. The same survey found that 48% were very concerned about unclear school or national policies.

Two things stand out. Teachers want training, and they want safe tools. Training without a tool to practise on feels abstract. A tool without training feels risky.

The role of AI tutor in education, in practice

Used well, an AI tutor can help in a few clear ways:

Extra practice. A student can try ten more problems at night, without waiting for the next class.
Different explanations. If a textbook paragraph didn't land, a student can ask for the same idea in simpler words.
Quick feedback. Students find out sooner when they've misunderstood something.
Teacher time. In the OECD country notes, teachers most often used AI to generate lesson plans or activities and to summarise topics. That's preparation work, and it can free time for students.

It also has limits. It can make mistakes. It can encourage students to lean on it too much. It works best when a teacher sets the task, such as "use the tutor to practise, then explain your answer in your own words in class."

How schools and institutes can close the gap

The gap is also an opening. A school or institute that offers simple, practical training can move ahead of others. Here's a realistic way to start:

Start small. Pick one subject and one use, like practice questions for a weak topic.
Let teachers try first. Give staff time to test a tool before students use it.
Write short, clear rules. Say what students may use AI for, and what they must do themselves.
Teach checking. Ask students to find one thing the AI got wrong or left out.
Review and adjust. After a month, ask teachers what worked and what didn't.

A common mistake is buying a tool and calling it training. A tool shows what's possible. Teachers still need time to practise with colleagues and talk through what went well.

Where a virtual classroom helps

Training works best when teachers can practise in a setting that looks like their real lessons. For institutes teaching online or in hybrid mode, a virtual classroom gives staff a shared space to run a mock lesson, test an activity, and give each other feedback before it reaches students.

Simpech Virtual Classroom is built for teachers, tutors, institutes, schools, and universities. A small group of teachers can use it to rehearse a lesson that includes AI-supported practice, then discuss how it went. Starting that way lets a school build confidence step by step.

FAQs

What is the role of an AI tutor in education?

An AI tutor supports students with extra practice, simple explanations, and quick feedback. It works alongside the teacher, who sets goals, checks accuracy, and judges understanding.

Can an AI tutor replace teachers?

No. It can't read a classroom, offer care, or make decisions about what students need. It's a support tool.

How many EU teachers have had AI training?

In TALIS 2024, 29.7% of surveyed EU teachers had taken part in professional development related to AI for teaching and learning. europa

What should teachers learn first about AI?

Start with how to write clear prompts, how to check answers for mistakes, and how to set simple classroom rules for student use.
